Fitness Instructor/Personal Trainer (part-time)

Location: Rockford, IL

Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center is a retirement community committed to serving our residents with the upmost dignity and respect and caring for our staff in the same manner. We have served the community for 55 years and pride ourselves on the care we have been able to give during that time.

We are seeking a part-time Fitness Instructor/Personal Trainer. This individual will create and implement a fitness program uniquely catered to the needs of our seniors.

Schedule and Pay Information:

  • Hours: 10-13 hours per week
  • Position pay scale: $18.20 - 21.25 per hour

Job Description

Primary Function: Develops and implements a fitness program to meet the resident’s needs.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for promoting, planning and directing the fitness center.
  • Implements programs/classes of individual or group fitness based on resident needs.
  • Participates in the development of resident’s exercise schedule.
  • Responsible for the evaluations of the resident’s physical abilities.
  • Responsible for assessments/physical clearance and liability waiver documents completed.
  • Responsible for orienting residents to the fitness equipment and ensuring residents can safely utilize the equipment.
  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the equipment and communicate any needed Maintenance or repairs.
  • Interacts positively with all residents at all times.
  • Participates in creating an atmosphere, which allows for the privacy, dignity, cleanliness, safety and well bearing of each resident.
  • Safeguards privacy and confidentiality of all resident health care information, which includes complying with all HIPAA regulations.
  • Acts as a customer service representative for Fairhaven with residents, families, vendors, volunteers and other visitors.
  • Interacts positively with all residents at all times creating an atmosphere, which promotes a homelike environment.
  • Maintains, cares for and safely uses supplies and equipment effectively and efficiently per Fairhaven policies and procedures.
  • Maintains sanitary conditions; follows infection control and waste management procedures as they relate to this position.
  • Reports incidents of abuse, neglect or a violation of the resident’s rights immediately.
  • Protects personal belongings of each resident, reports missing items and assists in attempting to locate them.
  • Completes all in-service training requirements in a timely manner
  • Completes all duties and tasks as assigned.

Essential Qualifications & Requirements: Type of work and characteristics of duties require:

  • Physical condition allowing for normal fitness coordinator duties including but not limited to: sitting, reaching, grabbing, standing, walking, use of arms and hands, ability to read, and presentation abilities in front of large groups.
  • Ability to accurately communicate verbally with people of diverse backgrounds and education.
  • Ability to use reasonable prudent judgment in the problem solving and decision making process.
  • Computer knowledge necessary to perform duties such as flyers, invitations, etc. announcing classes/sessions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a friendly manner to staff, residents, and the general public in English both in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to show warmth, love and compassion to the residents.
  • Dependability & punctuality
  • Adherence to all regulations specified in the Fairhaven employee handbook, procedures and policy documents.

Other Duties:

  • Identifies improvements to processes and implement as able.
  • Identifies safety hazards and emergency situations and initiate corrective action or report.
  • Performs tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job but which may be altered or redesigned depending upon individual circumstances.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Marketing & Resident Services.

Experience & Education or skills:

  • High school or equivalent
  • Advanced communication skills, which allow interactions in a positive, professional, compassionate, and understanding manner.
  • Computer skills
  • ACE, AFAA, ACSM, or CSCS required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in an exercise or fitness background preferred.
  • Ability to obtain appropriate driver’s License.

Working Conditions:

  • Comfortable working in all levels of care for exercise groups, working in resident rooms for 1-1 intervention, the exercise room, and fitness center.
  • Typical health care facility exposure when working with the elderly residents including potential injury or infection.
  • Comfortable teaching/training in a group and 1:1.
  • Comfortable with multi-task environment.
